One of the central tasks of the museum is to ensure that the museum objects are preserved in the museum for as long as possible by means of appropriate care and maintenance, and to display the museum collections together with their background information to the general public.
No material will keep for ever even in ideal conditions but deterioration can be slowed down by remedial conservation and preventive conservation, which first and foremost means the use of appropriate methods and space for storing the museum collections, as well as careful handling and safe display of the material.
The purpose of conservation is to ensure that artefacts and other material will be preserved. By using certain remedial and protective techniques, the survival of old objects for future generations is guaranteed and their decay is halted. Conservation does not restore the original appearance of the object under treatment. In practice, conservation means protecting a cleaned object from external and internal factors causing decay. All measures taken during conservation can later be reversed without causing damage to the object.
Lusto also offers a conservation service, subject to charge, to organisations and private persons, and hires conservation space and equipment by arrangement.
