Lusto houses Finland’s most extensive photo collection related to the history of forestry and the use of forests, comprising around 250,000 photos and negatives as well as over 1,000 films of various kinds.
The oldest photos date back to the late 19th century and the newest ones are from recent years. The topics include silviculture, forestry work, transport, the sawmill industry and other forest industry sectors, and the multiple use of forests. The archives contain a large number of photo collections of various forestry organisations. In addition there are numerous smaller photo collections that have been obtained as donations from businesses, societies and private persons.
The value of the photo archives is based on diverse collections comprising photos received from organisations and private persons as well as from professional and amateur photographers. Good-quality photos related to forestry are still being collected for the photo archives to complement the existing collections. Different kinds of collections shed light on Finnish forest culture from various perspectives and provide diverse material for research, publications and exhibitions.
Lusto’s photo collections can be viewed in a digital format on the online Kantapuu data base. The data base, available in Finnish, can be used for browsing through photos and searching for information about them as well as for ordering photos.
