In 2000 Lusto launched, in cooperation with forestry businesses and organisations, a preservation project, the objective of which was to collect and preserve the central material associated with the history of mechanised forestry.
The mechanisation of forestry took its initial steps a generation ago. The first tree-felling machines were made as early as the 1920s but the actual era of mechanisation did not start until the 1960s. The development of the field has been and apparently will continue to be rapid. The lifespan of forestry machines is relatively short, with the types and models changing frequently.
As a result of the project, Lusto has significant collections of forestry machines and chainsaws as well as lots of other material related to forestry machines and the mechanisation of forestry. In addition, experiences and reminiscences of machine designers and machine operators have been preserved as recorded interviews.
The material of the Mechanised Forestry Preservation Project will be extensively utilised when designing the museum’s new permanent exhibition.
