The Finnish Forest History Society informs its members about current events, publications and research in the field of forest history. It aims at promoting the networking of people interested in and conducting research into forest history.

Between 1999 and 2002, the Forest History Society carried out the‘Forestry Professionals in the Changing Society’ history project in cooperation with the Institute for Cultural Research of the University of Helsinki. The project was funded by the Metsämiesten Säätiö Foundation. During the course of the project, over a thousand forestry professionals were interviewed in order to collect information about changes that had taken place in forestry work between the 1950s and 1960s. The interview material collected during the project is preserved at Lusto. A number of research projects based of the material are being planned.

Between 1996 and 1999, the Forest History Society organised a project during which reference data on forest history material kept in various archives was collected. The data can be found in the publication ‘Metsähistorian arkistolähteitä Suomessa’ (ed. Katri Kaunisto, 2001) and in the eViikki reference database of the Viikki Science Library of the University of Helsinki.

The Forest History Society is working for the forest history research also by awarding special prices for scholarly theses related to forest history or traditions.
